Our Story: A Legacy of Excellence

The Blackwood Academy of Dramatic Arts was established in 1958 by the visionary stage and screen actor, Alistair Blackwood. Dissatisfied with the prevailing methods of acting training, Blackwood sought to create an academy that nurtured individual talent, emphasized practical experience, and fostered a supportive and collaborative environment. Housed initially in a small studio in Soho, the academy quickly gained a reputation for its innovative approach to acting education.

Alistair Blackwood, a celebrated performer known for his captivating stage presence and nuanced interpretations of classic roles, poured his heart and soul into the academy. He believed that true acting came from a deep understanding of human psychology, a mastery of physical and vocal techniques, and an unwavering commitment to the craft. His initial faculty consisted of fellow actors, directors, and playwrights who shared his passion for excellence.

Over the decades, the Blackwood Academy has evolved and expanded, adapting to the changing landscape of the performing arts. In the 1980s, the academy moved to its current location in Covent Garden, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with multiple studios, a black box theatre, and cutting-edge media equipment. The curriculum was broadened to include courses in screen acting, musical theatre, and physical theatre, reflecting the growing demand for versatile performers.

Today, the Blackwood Academy of Dramatic Arts stands as one of London's most prestigious acting schools, attracting students from around the world. While much has changed since its humble beginnings, the academy remains true to Alistair Blackwood's original vision: to provide aspiring actors with the highest quality training, the resources they need to succeed, and a supportive community to call home. We are proud of our history and excited about the future.
